Tokyo Metropolitan Government project to support small and medium-sized
enterprises for exhibiting medical device/components of medical device at overseas exhibitions

GREETING

Tokyo is the capital and the economic, political and cultural center of Japan. Above all, there are a great number of small and medium-sized enterprises in Tokyo with exceptional products and advanced technologies that are leading Japan’s industries. To spur on the nation’s industries, we, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, have been supporting these SMEs with their development of products and sales channels.
As continuous, long-term growth is projected for the medical devices industry, we have established an international business hub for life sciences and are endeavoring to gather industry, academia, and public organizations together.
The Tokyo Pavilion consists of 16 Tokyo-based SMEs that have earned a reputation both in Japan and overseas for their advanced technologies and superior products.
Each booth has Japanese-English-German interpreters available to provide you with explanations and facilitate business negotiations.
We hope that you will try out the technologies and products at the Tokyo Pavilion, experience the capabilities of Tokyo’s companies, and consider cooperation with Tokyo’s SMEs.

The Japanese domestic market continues to grow, and has maintained a scale of 25.6 billion USD in 2023 even in the situation of significant yen depreciation. The continued growth was also seen in exports reaching a size of 6.84 billion USD in 2022.

Tokyo: a city where SMEs shine

  • Aside from the large number of global companies headquartered in Tokyo, our city is also home to 412,906 SMEs (as of 2016 (1)) that range from historical companies producing traditional crafts, to up-and-coming startups creating the latest trends. SMEs in Tokyo are not only subcontractor for large companies but are also innovators of unique technologies that cannot be emulated despite the small scale of the business. Moreover, numerous Tokyo SMEs hold the top market shares in the industry's global market. In the "Global Niche Top Companies Selection 100", an award by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry that presents prestigious awards to companies holding high market shares in global markets and niche fields, 55 SMEs were selected. Of these, Tokyo SMEs account for the largest number of prefectures, with a total of 12 companies selected. (2)

  • Exhibitors with great potential

Tokyo is home to many SMEs that are highly regarded in the global medical device market. For example, a SME in Tokyo has developed an "intracerebral aneurysm clip" to prevent cerebral artery rhexis and is being used worldwide.
The SME also holds one of the biggest global market shares.
Another SME in Tokyo which developed a "painless injection needle" as thin as the mosquito needle, also holds a dominant global market share.
As the two SMEs mentioned above, many Tokyo SMEs are recognized for their technological capabilities and have gained a prominent presence in the global market.

Not to mention, each company participating in this year's Tokyo Pavilion possesses a unique and remarkable technologies despite their small business sizes. It is the great potential of these companies that they have been selected for the Tokyo Pavilion.
